  • Spreebogen panoramic view – Berlin citytrip, Germany

Early morning, while the crowd on the streets remained sparse, we enjoyed the panaramic view from the Moltkebrücke over the Spree river. This particular stretch of the river is known as the Spreebogen. The last photo was taken at the Spreebogenpark. I like the serene atmosphere, with only these few individuals in the scene.

  • Liesenbrücken – Berlin citytrip, Germany

On our second search for the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall Memorial), at the intersection of Liesenstrasse and Gartenstrasse, we discovered an impressive set of iron bridges that seemed to be totally overgrown and abandoned. A total suprise find!

A search online reveiled it’s names to be the Liesenbrücken, constructed in 1896. They have been abandoned since 1957. So, the bridges have been abandoned for more than 60 years, and they’re still there? How? I learned that they’re protected by a Berlin constitution called the Denkmalschutz. This constitution prevents these kind of historic items to be destroyed. So that’s how they still exist today.

Strange to realise, that in the year 1896, steam trains undoubtedly traversed these very tracks!

I then wondered why these bridges were abandoned in the first place, but upon checking the dates it’s obvious that it had something to do with the Great Berlin wall. The bridges were a connection between East- and West Berlin. When the Berlin Wall was placed, it crossed the railroad tracks, so when you couldn’t go to the other side anymore, then, of course it meant that the traffic by train had to stop as well, hence the abandoning.

  • Zimt & Zucker at the Reichstagufer – Berlin citytrip, Germany

After finally finding something affordable to eat for lunch, we found ourselves nestled at the Reichstagufer, looking out over this vibrant bulding. In the distance, the omnipresent S-bahn can be spotted. What is not obvious in the photo, is the numerous homeless people on the streets. The compact vehicle parked at the railing likely containing all the belongings of one such individual, a harsh reality faced by many.

  • Hallesches Tor – Berlin citytrip, Germany

After visiting the stunning street art in the vicinity of Hallesches Tor, we escaped this part of town via the S-Bahn. But not without photographing this Railway station, its slightly worn appearance possessing an endearing charm. Ok, it’s a bit shabby, but in a good way 🙂

  • Streetart in the Hallesches Tor area – Berlin citytrip, Germany

Marvelous street art on the flanks of these buildings. Photographs fall short of conveying their true grandeur; a personal visit is necessary to truly grasp their scale!
